In 2007, The Qantas Group engaged Cooperative Change’s services to strengthen and build on its history of employment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. These services include attracting candidates from across Australia, preparing people for interviews and mentoring people once they are in the workforce.

Attracting Indigenous employees
Cooperative Change’s extensive contacts and linkages with Indigenous communities, employment and training organisations and other service providers across Australia allow us to engage with Indigenous people who are either unemployed and looking for work, or currently employed and seeking a career change.
The attraction part of our work includes:
- Building and maintaining positive relationships with local Indigenous organisations and community networks at a range of locations
- Outlining pathways for young Indigenous people who aspire to work with the Qantas Group so they know what they need to do to access employment in the future
- Promoting the Qantas Group as an employer of Indigenous people to a range of employment and community agencies.
Selecting the right candidate for the job
Cooperative Change puts forward suitable candidates who we believe are job ready for positions within the Qantas Group as they become available. The Qantas Group then selects staff to meet their specific requirements. Our role is to provide coaching and training to give suitable candidates every chance of success.
The selection part of our work includes:
- Researching the specific requirements of each role to ensure the best candidate match
- Conducting resume, phone and face-to-face screening, reference checking and short listing of candidates
- Providing assessments and recommendations against short listed candidates
- Providing support, feedback and coaching to candidates where necessary.
Providing mentoring & support to new staff
Cooperative Change utilises extensive resources and personnel in the provision of mentoring and support to Indigenous candidates who are successfully placed with the Qantas Group.
The retention part of our work includes:
- Delivery of cultural competency training to teams where new employees will be working
- Regular telephone and face to face contact with successful candidates by Indigenous mentors, using a case management model.
